Asura aren't elves. Not even close.
If you want to play one like in LotR why not play LotR Online (Beta)?
I agree with the people wanting Tengu. They rock! They look great and are quite vicious.

Dude,
I've been wanting to play Charr. How can I name my character Chewbacca and be human?
I'd love to play a Mesmer Charr wearing that mesmer nighty. oh so damn sexy. LOL.
Tengu would be awesome. Especially if it was a fire ele named KFC.

Obviously when it comes out, I'll be spending at least 4 hours in character creation and then playing the best looking one straight away! But I'm sure that I'll be creating a character in each race to see how they play etc and then decide on how I'll be taking things! It should be good though - I'm looking forward to the amount of variety in GW2!
EDIT: Chewbacca....Ew! The charr in a mesmer nighty is NOT what I wanted to think about :s

Lol eww like Charr with long hair and lipstick....eww
personally if each different race has different attributes, im thinking auras are gonna be the physically weak - mentally strong, Sylvians - physically and mentally pretty strong, Norns phyiscally strong - entally not, humans - average
I wanna make a Male Asura Necro with dreadlocks...haha

Male Sylvari give a new twist on the term 'fairy boys'...
Maybe you can dress one of those up in your mesmer's nighty.

Hopefuly Anet will keep themselves at peace with god and keep GW 2 free online play, in that case Charr sound nice, but will probraly be lacking mental capacity for things like Mesmer or Ritualist (they like the strong, shiny things, like fire magic and big axes ). I haven't read the article as of late...but it seems as if these sylvarians look like my choice, if above human. Of course it all depends on what the ablilities of the character are, in comparison to how they look (who knew I would play a Khajit in Morrowind? Their not wearing boots makes em the best Nightblade in the game! Plus with Glass Armor they don't look THAT bad...). But, it's mostly looks, and how many people play something else (if everyone makes a charr...forget charr!). Forgotten would rock....

I would try out one of each race, but possibly in the order of races I look most forward to...
1) Human (for GW1 sake)
2) Tengu (if available)
3) Charr
4) Forgotten (if available)
5) Centaur (if available)
6) Silvari
7) Asura
8) Norn
I would never play Dwarf if it was available. Ever.
Anet, if you do anything for us in GW2, make Tengu, Centaur, and Forgotten playable races.

I doubt we will see the Forgotten as a playable race. They are in the "Elite" category, along with the Mursaat and Margonites.
Dwarves, likely.

Charr Assassin anyone?
I'm still curious as to how exactly races are going to be implemented.

LoL, Charr Assassin. his claws would be bigger than the daggers he will be holding! I was also wondering, as current Tengu hold their swords upside down, I wonder if that will carry through in GW2 if they're playable.

Charr are the only real interest for me of any of the confirmed races. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the unlikely event that margonites are included as a playable race. /swoon

How cool would it be if there were a Sylvari profession that planted trees? And the trees gave out loads of "fruit"? It would be like an expanded version of the Ritualist's spirits and ashes.
Yeah, I know, at first I was all "NOOO STAY OUT OF MY GAME ELFY MCPRANCYSPARKLE!" But the hippy in me is starting to warm up to them.
God, two years...ANet are sadists, pure and simple.

I have no idea what the Sylvari and the Norm are at this point. If anyone could tell me it would be much appreciated. Right now I am going have a Male Warrior and a Asura Monk.

Lol! The fact that it's a goblin doesn't change it's appearance and you've already seen how they look like, so whats the difference?
